LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — UNLV announced Josh Pastner as the new head coach for the Runnin’ Rebels men’s basketball team on Tuesday.
“We are thrilled to welcome Coach Pastner to the UNLV Family as he takes the helm of the Runnin’ Rebel Basketball program,” Director of Athletics Erick Harper said. “He is a fearless and relentless recruiter with success as a head coach and is also an exceptional communicator, deeply committed to engaging with the Las Vegas community.”
Pastner steps into the role previously held by Kevin Kruger, who was fired in early March. He joins UNLV after serving as head coach at Georgia Tech from 2016 to 2023 and at Memphis from 2009 to 2016.
With 14 seasons of head coaching experience, the 47-year-old compiled a 276-187 record, leading his teams to several postseason appearances. Pastner was also honored as the 2017 ACC Coach of the Year and the 2013 C-USA Coach of the Year.
“I am truly enthused about becoming the head coach of the Runnin’ Rebels,” Pastner said. “This has always been a dream job for me. The program holds great importance for both the Las Vegas community and the region, and I am eager to unite Rebel Nation with the goal of restoring the program to national prominence.”
The Rebels won the national championships in 1990. They haven’t reached the NCAA Tournament since 2013 and haven’t advanced past the Sweet 16 since 2007.
“Josh is committed to connecting with Runnin’ Rebel alumni, ensuring that everyone feels involved in the program’s success. We are confident that he will lead us to win championships and return the Runnin’ Rebels to the NCAA Tournament,” Harper said.
Pastner will be formally introduced to the public on Wednesday, March 26, at 10 a.m. in Thomas & Mack Center’s Strip View Pavilion.
