Welcome to another edition of NHL Predictions! After a quiet day on Monday, with only one game played, things get busier on Tuesday. On Tuesday, 14 games are being played around the league. This particular installment looks at the game between the St. Louis Blues and the Edmonton Oilers.
NHL Predictions
St. Louis Blues vs. Edmonton Oilers
Time: 8:00 P.M. Eastern Time
TV: ESPN+, Hulu
Head-to-Head: 1-0 Oilers
The Blues and Oilers meet for the second time this season. The Oilers took round one in early December, 4-2. Connor McDavid led the way for the Oilers with a goal and an assist.
Tuesday’s game is the only game in the season series in St. Louis.
Blues Face 2024 Stanley Cup Final Participants, Starting with Edmonton
The Blues will see each 2024 Stanley Cup Final participant this week in back-to-back games. After hosting the Oilers, the Blues will welcome Matthew Tkachuk and the reigning Stanley Cup Champion Florida Panthers on Thursday.
The Blue Note enters this two-game stretch following a win on Sunday in Utah. The win snapped a three-game losing streak. Furthermore, the Blues played a strong game from start to finish. In the first period, the Blues had 15 shots on goal. While Utah picked up the pace in the second and third periods, the Blues kept their foot on the gas pedal and won behind a late goal by Jordan Kyrou and 24 saves by Jordan Binnington.
“I just liked how we started the game aggressively, and we played all 60 minutes aggressively,” head coach Jim Montgomery said. “It was good to see us compete like that, play hard for each other, and get rewarded.”
The Blues will look to maintain that aggressive play against an Oilers team fighting for first place in the Pacific Division.
Oilers Open Brief Midwest Road Trip
The Oilers are coming off a tough loss on Saturday. The team fell behind 3-0 in the first period and trailed 4-1 in the third period before a late push came up just short. Now, the team heads for a brief two-game road trip. After visiting the Blues, the Oilers will play the Chicago Blackhawks on Thursday.
The Oilers’ remaining schedule before the 4 Nations Face-Off provides an opportunity for the team to pad the points in their division chase. Of the remaining four games, only one is against a team with a winning record. Eight points are on the line in these next four games. Earning any less than six should be considered a disappointment for the team.
Prediction
The home team has won the last three games between the Blues and Oilers. Furthermore, the Blues have not lost the season series to the Oilers since the 2016-17 season. Before that, the Blues had not lost the season series since 2008-09. As a result, the odds are in the Blues favour to win this game. On the other hand, consistency has been a problem lately for the Blues. This would favour the first-place Oilers.
If ties were still a possibility, we may be inclined to go that route. However, since we need to choose a winner, we will go with the first-place team.
Oilers win, 5-3.
Prop Bets
The over/under is set at 5.5 goals. We are taking the over with eight total goals.
For the Oilers, we are taking McDavid as anytime-scorer. Furthermore, consider choosing McDavid to score two or more goals. After all, McDavid needs to do some scoring if he wants to catch up to Leon Draisaitl for the team lead in goals. For the Blues, we are taking the team’s leading goal-scorer, Kyrou.
