The Baker Mayfield era came to an end on Friday, as the Cleveland Browns acquired Deshaun Watson in a blockbuster trade with the Houston Texans.
In his first four seasons with the Browns, Mayfield had 14,125 passing yards, 92 touchdowns an 56 interceptions.
Although he struggled this past season, Mayfield should still have an active trade market. He’s just 26 years old and is on an expiring contract.
So where will Mayfield end up? There are four landing spots that make the most sense for the former No. 1 overall pick.
Carolina Panthers
The Panthers are clearly in the market for a quarterback. They made a strong run at Deshaun Watson for about a year, but they were ultimately unable to acquire him.
Mayfield isn’t the most dynamic quarterback in the world, but he’d be a noticeable upgrade over Sam Darnold. It’s also worth noting that Carolina has plenty of weapons on offense, such as Robby Anderson, Christian McCaffrey and D.J. Moore.
Indianapolis Colts
According to Jeff Howe of The Athletic, Mayfield told the Browns that he’d prefer to be traded to the Colts. That makes an awful lot of sense when you take a look at their roster.
Not only do the Colts have playmakers on defense, they have a solid offensive line and arguably the best running back in the league in Jonathan Taylor. If Mayfield can revert to his 2020 form, the Colts would certainly be a playoff team with him under center.
New Orleans Saints
There’s a strong chance the Saints will re-sign Jameis Winston for the 2022 season. However, they could call the Browns just to see what their asking price is for Mayfield.
Former Saints head coach Sean Payton liked Mayfield as a prospect back in 2018. Perhaps his former assistant coaches feel the same way.
Seattle Seahawks
Russell Wilson’s departure has left the Seahawks with a huge hole to fill at quarterback. Pete Carroll probably doesn’t think Drew Lock is the answer, and understandably so.
If Seattle is willing to part ways with some of its draft picks, it could acquire Mayfield and remain competitive in the loaded NFC West.
