Second-year player replaces Gardner Minshew
Aidan O’Connell gets the call.
Las Vegas Raiders coach Antonio Pierce announced Wednesday will start Sunday against the Pittsburgh Steelers at Allegiant Stadium. Kickoff is set at 1:05 p.m. PT.
But Pierce changed that course and opened the practice week by making a decision
Pierce ended a training camp battle on August 18 (three weeks before the season opener) by naming Minshew the starter over O’Connell.
Pierce pulled Minshew in favor of O’Connell in the third quarter of a 34-18 loss at the Denver Broncos on Sunday. Minshew threw two interceptions, once which was returned for a touchdown. O’Connell was also intercepted.
O’Connell went 5-5 as a rookie last season.
Pierce said he hopes the decision is for the rest of the season, but he said he would go back to Minshew if he needs to.
