On Tuesday night, the No. 1 women’s tennis player in the world made a shocking revelation: she’s retiring.
Australian star Ash Barty took to Instagram with a video where she announced her retirement. The announcement comes as a shock because Barty is just 25 years old and at the top of her game.
“It’s the first time I’ve actually said it out loud and, yeah, it’s hard to say,” an emotional Barty told former doubles partner Casey Dellacqua in an interview. “But I’m so happy, and I’m so ready.”

Fans all around the world will be wondering why she made that decision now. She provided that answer in the video on Instagram as well. Barty said she doesn’t have the drive it takes to stay at the top of her game right now.
“I don’t have the physical drive, the emotional want and everything it takes to challenge yourself at the very top of the level any more. I am spent.”
Barty’s decision to walk away from the game comes just two months winning the Australian Open. She took home three major titles in all: the 2019 French Open, the 2021 Wimbledon and, back in January, the Australian Open.
