The deadline for NFL teams to exercise the fifth-year option for first-round picks from 2019 is May 2. Moments ago, the Arizona Cardinals made a decision on star quarterback Kyler Murray’s rookie contract.
According to NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport, the Cardinals have picked up Murray’s fifth-year option. That means he’s under contract through the 2023 season.
Murray was selected by the Cardinals with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. Since joining the franchise, he has 11,480 passing yards, 1,786 rushing yards and 90 total touchdowns.
There have been a lot of rumors surrounding Murray’s future with the Cardinals, but the front office has stated that it doesn’t plan on trading the former Heisman Trophy winner.

Murray recently responded to all the rumors on Twitter. He made it known that he wants to stay in Arizona.
“I wanna win Super Bowls with the Cardinals,” Murray wrote, “AZ is home.”
The Cardinals still need to work out a long-term extension with Murray, but picking up his fifth-year option is a no-brainer for the team.
