Since the offseason, there have been rumors linking Las Vegas Raiders star wide receiver Davante Adams to the New York Jets as a potential trade acquisition. Even though Adams regularly stated his desire to remain with the Raiders, the rumors never stopped, due in part to Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers keeping them alive himself.
And now, with a clear divide between Adams and the Raiders and a less-than-ideal start to the season for the Jets, the two sides have finally come together on a deal sending Adams to the Jets for a conditional third-round pick via Bobby Kownack of NFL.com:
Seven days after the Jets fired their head coach and less than 24 hours after a prime-time loss to the Bills, they have agreed to a trade for Adams from the Raiders, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported on Tuesday, per sources.
Las Vegas will receive a conditional 2025 third-round pick in exchange for Adams, Rapoport and NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero reported, per sources.
The third-rounder can become a second-round pick if Adams becomes a first- or second-team All-Pro this season, or if he’s on the active roster should the Jets make the AFC Championship Game or Super Bowl LIX, per Pelissero.
Pelissero added that the Jets have agreed to take on the rest of Adams’ salary in order to get the deal done, per a source. Adams’ base salary is $16.89 million and he also has $510,000 in per-game active roster bonuses. The Jets will take on the prorated portion, which comes out to $11.6 million.
The move isn’t much of a surprise at this point, as there were issues between Adams and Raiders head coach Antonio Pierce, and the receiver’s trade demand was well known. Additionally, the Jets were always viewed as one of the top landing spots and reportedly were at the top of Adams’ preferred trade destination list.
This has the opportunity to be a win-win for both sides. The Jets add another big-time weapon to go along with Garrett Wilson and Breece Hall, which will hopefully give their sluggish offense a boost. The Raiders are obviously losing a major weapon, but this could also be a case of addition by subtraction in getting a disgruntled player out the door, though Adams, by all accounts, remained professional throughout this ordeal.
Regardless, Davante Adams’ time with the Raiders has come to an unfortunate end, and the franchise will now have to move forward in its attempts to return to being a premier franchise.
Raiders betting underdogs in Week 7 matchup vs. Rams
Even before Adams was dealt away, many were losing faith in the Raiders, underlined by the betting lines for their Week 7 contest against the Los Angeles Rams.
Despite the Rams starting the season off 1-4, the Raiders still come into this contest as 5.5 point underdogs, showing how little faith the bookmakers have in this team. Odds for the Raiders to outright win the game are between +190 and +205 across different books placing the team as 2:1 underdogs against a Rams team wrecked with injuries.
