The U.S. government is now listing Brittney Griner as a person of wrongful detainment, which should be a big step towards bringing the WNBA star home.
Griner, one of the top players in the WNBA, was detained in Russia a couple of months ago, when hash oil was allegedly found in her backpack at the airport.
Until now, the U.S. government has been pretty quiet in regards to her case. That’s been seen as strategy by some, considering the state of relationships with Russia.
However, on Tuesday morning, ESPN insider T.J Quinn reported that a big step was taken.
“Brittney Griner is now classified as “wrongfully detained” by Russia, U.S. State Department says. Major shift in her case. Means officials will try to negotiate her release rather than let Russian legal system play out,” he reports.

Griner’s agent is encouraged.
“Brittney has been detained for 75 days and our expectation is that the White House do whatever is necessary to bring her home,” Griner’s agent, Lindsay Kagawa Colas, told ESPN.
Hopefully we’ll get to see Griner on her way back to the United States very soon.
