One of the key gripes the Cleveland Browns are believed to have with quarterback Baker Mayfield is a lack of maturity.
A point of contention during today’s introductory press conference for Watson came when owner Jimmy Haslam was questioned. He was asked about an alleged comment where someone in the organization called on Mayfield to be more of an “adult.”
But Haslam denied that any such comment about Mayfield was made by ownership. Though he didn’t state whether it came from someone in the organization.
It seems like that the “adult” comment was an excuse for some other gripe the team had with Mayfield. After trading for Deshaun Watson, the Browns would be massive hypocrites if they considered maturity to be a barrier to being their quarterback.

There’s no denying that Baker Mayfield could have handled himself differently during his first four years in Cleveland. While he was hardly a train wreck like Johnny Manziel, some of his social media and interview behavior left a lot to be desired.
It was largely thanks to his leading the Browns to the playoffs in 2020 after a career-year that the Browns picked up his fifth-year option for 2022 to begin with. But after missing the playoffs in 2021, the Browns decided that they needed an upgrade.
That upgrade comes in the form of Deshaun Watson, a three-time Pro Bowler and former passing yards leader. But due to over 20 allegations of assault pending against him in civil court, Watson is by no means a guaranteed starter in Week 1.
The Browns have a real mess on their hands, and while Baker Mayfield bears some responsibility for failing to produce on the field, they did him pretty dirty.
