The Arizona Cardinals have exercised the fifth-year option on Kyler Murray’s rookie contract, per NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport.
This moves comes in the midst of a turbulent offseason including an infamous social media scrub and a longterm contract request from the former No. 1 overall pick. Just because the Cardinals picked up this option doesn’t mean a longterm contract couldn’t be coming sometime in the near future.

This move shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise as Cardinals general manager Steve Keim indicated that the organization would ultimately pick up his fifth-year option back in March.
The NFL world took to Twitter to react to this news.
“Now they should give him a long-term extension,” one fan suggested.
“I mean we all knew that but will he get a new contract before training camp???” another asked.

Unless a new contract deal comes into the picture before this coming season, Murray is set to make $5.49 million in 2022. If he remains under his fifth-year option in 2023, he’ll make $29.9 million — a figure elevated by back-to-back Pro Bowls over the last two seasons.
That being said, it’s widely expected that Murray will receive a contract extension before that time comes. For context, both Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes had their fifth-year options picked up before receiving massive extension deals later in the summer.
Murray didn’t show up for the Cardinals’ voluntary offseason workouts, but is expected to return later in the offseason.
