New offensive coordinator meets media
New Las Vegas Raiders offensive coordinator Chip Kelly met with media members Wednesday. Here are some highlights from his remarks:
- Kelly said he is excited to work with Raiders’ head coach Pete Carroll. The two have competed together in the college ranks when Kelly was the head coach at Oregon and Carroll as at USC and in the NFL when Kelly was in San Francisco and Carroll was at Seattle. Kelly said he has long respected Carroll.
- Kelly said he was happy in his role as the offensive coordinator of the national champion Ohio State Buckeyes and he’d only leave for an NFL job that has a strong structure from ownership down. Kelly likes how new part owner Tom Brady, Carroll and new general manager John Spytek work together. Kelly had a phone conversation with Brady during the hiring process and was impressed.
- Kelly said he has no clear idea on what the team will do at quarterback, because he was just hired and the focus is on filling the offensive staff. Yet, Kelly said his offense will be designed around his quarterbacks strengths and go from there.
- Kelly hasn’t been in the NFL since 2016. But he’s excited to be abck because its the highest level of the game and the competition is as high as he’s ever seen it.
- Kelly, 61, was non-committal on whether he wants to be a head coach again. He has 10 years experience as a head coach and four seasons as an NFL coach. He did say he enjoys being an offensive coordinator.
- Kelly’s philosophy as a coach? “Just win baby.” That will fly in these parts.
