Chris Godwin had an elite start to his 2025 season. He had at least 5 receptions and 50 yards in each of the first seven games of the season. However, Godwin’s season was cut short due to a season-ending ankle injury. Godwin is now a free agent this offseason, and there is a rumor that this team could target him.
Chris Godwin Could Be A Target For This Team
Although he is coming off of an ankle injury, Chris Godwin will still be a coveted free agent at wide receiver. One team that could target him is the Las Vegas Raiders. One major reason for this is Godwin’s relationship with the now minority owner of the Raiders, Tom Brady. Brady and Godwin won a Super Bowl together and were an incredibly dangerous duo in Tampa Bay.
Godwin’s success to date
Chris Godwin has had a great career. He has had four seasons with at least 1,000 receiving yards and has had four seasons with at least 80 receptions. With Raiders minority owner Tom Brady, Chris Godwin saw two of the best seasons of his career. In 2021 with Brady, Godwin recorded 98 receptions for 1,103 yards. Still with Brady in 2022, Godwin had 104 catches and 1,023 yards.
Potential fit in Las Vegas
Although the rest of the Las Vegas Raiders team is full of question marks, Chris Godwin would be a nice addition regardless. The Raiders have the number six pick in the upcoming 2025 NFL Draft. This could be used to either draft their quarterback of the future, potentially trade up in the draft, or trade back for more picks. If the Raiders want to take a rookie quarterback, Godwin combined with the emergence of tight end Brock Bowers would give their signal caller two very friendly targets. Bowers had arguably the best rookie tight end season of all time, and that was with lackluster quarterback play from Aidan O’Connell, Gardner Minshew, and Desmond Ridder. Godwin and Bowers could potentially form a top-tier duo in the league.
The Raiders may also decide to pursue a quarterback in free agency. Sam Darnold has been linked to the Raiders a few times during the start of the offseason. Darnold and Chris Godwin could make a great pairing for the Raiders offense. The Raiders could also pursue two Steelers quarterbacks Russell Wilson or Justin Fields. Godwin would make a great target for any of these quarterbacks the Raiders might be interested in.
Other major questions
The Raiders have a lot of questions surrounding their franchise. They still do not have a head coach named for the upcoming season, and they have many holes to fill on their roster. The offensive line frequently got beat last year. The team just named John Spytek the new general manager. It remains to be seen what his vision is for the rest of the coaching staff and roster. However, it is clear that upgrades are needed. The Raiders were only 4-13 on the season, and were consistently uncompetitive. We know Tom Brady will not tolerate that now that he is the minority owner. There should be changes coming to Las Vegas, and adding Godwin to the offense might be one of the changes we see.
