For the most part, the Chris Holtmann era at Ohio State has been a good one. However, success in the NCAA Tournament hasn’t followed much of that regular season success.
Ohio State narrowly missed a Sweet 16 berth after falling to No. 2 Villanova on Sunday; marking seven years since the Buckeyes made it to the third round of March Madness (which was under former head coach Thad Motta).
Following the loss, Holtmann addressed the media about his team and what the future holds for him in Columbus.
“Listen, it’s hard to win in this tournament,” Holtmann said via Adam Jardy of the Columbus Dispatch. “We’ve had four opportunities and we’ve performed pretty well in three of them. I believe in what we’re doing, I’m more than confident it will happen.”

The Ohio State coach went on to say that injuries played “a major role” in the Buckeyes’ season. And also said his team needs to just “keep getting there” in order to get over their NCAA Tournament hump.
Chris Holtmann owns a very respectable 107-55 record at Ohio State across his five seasons with the university. But there isn’t an abundance of patience in athletic director’s offices when it comes to the Power-5 conferences.
He’ll likely have another chance to get Ohio State deeper in the tourney.
