In a shocking turn of events, Texans QB Deshaun Watson has reportedly agreed to waive his no-trade clause to join the Cleveland Browns.
Soon after the deal was initially reported, NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport provided some details on Watson’s new contract with Cleveland.
The 26-year-old quarterback will receive a fully-guaranteed, five-year, $230 million contract. This breaks the previous record for fully-guaranteed money at signing ($150 million) by $80 million.
This new deal will have Watson under contract through the 2027 season. He’s set to earn $35 million this coming season.
Deshaun Watson gets a fully guaranteed 5 year $230M contract. That is $80M more than the previous record for fully guaranteed money at signing ($150M). This deal was negotiated by David Mulugheta of Athletes First. https://t.co/nQls9WRpD1

Earlier this week, several reports indicated that the Browns had been dropped from consideration by Watson’s camp. And with Baker Mayfield requesting a trade away from the organization, Cleveland was expected to be on the hunt for its next QB1 elsewhere.
Now, it appears the team has found their longterm franchise QB in Watson.
While Watson was cleared of all criminal charges earlier this month, he still faces more than 20 civil cases of alleged sexual assault and misconduct. With this in mind, he’ll likely faces a significant suspension from the NFL at the start of the 2022 season.
What do you think of this record-breaking deal for Watson?
