ESPN names top free agent safety Trevon Moehrig in the top 50 list of players that will hit the market with a ton of value. According to Jeremy Fowler, he put together a list of athletes that could have an impact this upcoming season with a new team. He lists Moehrig at No. 13 which is no surprise considering the two seasons the uprising player had, recording five interceptions and 12 pass breakups. Fowler said Moehrig’s film was one of the best of any free agent so it looks like any team looking for a new safety could benefit from his presence.
Originally selected in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft, the former TCU product came into the league helping the Raiders lead to their first playoff appearance in years. However, with limitations, he didn’t make much of an impact but Moehrig found a way to have meaningful seasons where he could earn a big payday for a new team. This spells bad news for Las Vegas which is in the middle of a rebuilding culture since hiring Hall of Fame Head Coach Pete Carroll. They will sustain another setback in their safety unit, but it makes sense for Moehrig to move on to a contender next season to help earn his first Super Bowl crown.

Possible Fits
Baltimore Ravens
There are a few reports that list the Ravens as the best fit for the standout safety. This makes sense considering the season Marcus Williams had in 2024 after receiving a bench in Ar’Darius Washington. Kyle Hamilton is expected to receive a massive extension but the addition of Moehrig on the opposite side should solidify the safety unit. After having one of the worst pass defenses, Washington and Moehrig could compete for the starting job this upcoming season.
Los Angeles Chargers
Meanwhile, the salary cap is in favor of the Los Angeles Chargers considering they need to sign back a few defensive pieces. Since they have the money for it, they should add Moehrig to bolster the safety unit. Alohi Gilman is coming off a season-ending injury so it seems the Chargers may cut him if it means bringing in Moehrig. The young safety could pair with Derwin James to help add some support in the no-fly zone attack.
Carolina Panthers
The Panthers spent most of the last offseason gathering support for quarterback Bryce Young. However, they must do something about the defense since they can’t win ball games with just their offense alone. With Xavier Woods hitting the market, it would be a no-brainer for the Panthers to sign Moehrig. The team has one of the most unproven secondary units in the league and the presence of Moehrig could change the landscape of it to pair with Jaycee Horn if he returns.
New Orleans Saints
New Orleans could trade veteran Tyrann Mathieu this upcoming offseason to make some room for salary cap. General Manager Mickey Loomis must get creative with their financial situation and that might be the move that could force them to save them. While Mathieu has an uncertain future, the team already lost Marshon Lattimore and is at risk of Paulson Adebo leaving. Perhaps, the Saints finding a way to sign Moehrig could be the beginning of a new regime.
Washington Commanders
The Commanders have all of the marbles to win a Super Bowl one day but it will be up to the crucial turnovers they could pull off to juice up the momentum. Jeremy Chinn had one of the quieter 2024 campaigns, unlike other secondary pieces like Mike Sainristil and Benjamin St-Juste. Chinn will hit the market but the Commanders signing Moehrig would be no surprise. Both parties are in “win now” mode and could be a perfect pairing in Washington.
