ESPN NBA Draft analyst Mike Schmitz has been evaluating prospects for at least a decade, so he’s seen some legit talent preparing to enter the league.
This afternoon, Schmitz made an eye-opening comment regarding 18-year-old French big man Victor Wembanyama, who currently plays for ASVEL in the top professional league in France. The 7-foot-3 Wembanyama is projected as the possible No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft.
He’s also, according to Schmitz, the best prospect he’s ever appraised.

Wembanyama has been on the NBA radar for several years. He’s battled some minor injuries this season, but has made a positive overall impression on his head coach, T.J. Parker.
“First of all, he listens, and he wants to get better,” Parker said. “It’s not easy for him because he has that kind of body. He has to get stronger, and he works hard every day, so he deserves his minutes.”
In the clips of Wembanyama’s latest performance above, you can see he has tremendous length and wing span and is very skilled for his age and size. He’s got the ability to be versatile offensively and defensively and acquitted himself well in a matchup with current Gonzaga freshman Chet Holmgren last year.
He’s got a long way to go to be NBA-ready–and it’s kind of crazy Schmitz ranks him where he does in terms of prospects he’s seen all-time–but it is clear that Wembanyama has the potential to be special when all is said and done.
