San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan already had plenty of running backs at his disposal for the 2022 season, but that didn’t stop him from selecting LSU’s Ty Davis-Price in this year’s draft.
The 49ers selected Davis-Price with the 93rd overall pick on Friday night. In his final season at LSU, he had 1,003 yards and six touchdowns on 211 carries.
While it’s very possible Davis-Price ends up being an impact player for the 49ers, some people can’t get over the fact that Shanahan has drafted yet another running back.
“The year is 2056. Kyle Shanahan drafts a day 2 running back, replacing the late-rounder/UDFA who broke out at the position for him the year before after he benched his previous day 2 running back,” ESPN’s Seth Walder tweeted.

“Death, taxes and Kyle Shanahan drafting a running back he doesn’t need,” Jesse Pantuosco of Audacy Sports said.

Last year, the 49ers drafted two running backs in Trey Sermon and Elijah Mitchell.
Mitchell had an exceptional rookie year in San Francisco, rushing for 963 yards and five touchdowns. Sermon, meanwhile, struggled to climb up the depth chart.
It’s unclear what Davis-Price’s role will be this fall, but perhaps he was drafted to replace Sermon.
