The rumors that Baker Mayfield might join the Pittsburgh Steelers will most likely remain only that – rumors. At least, that’s what one top NFL insider is saying publicly.
Appearing on The Pat McAfee Show, NFL insider Ian Rapoport was skeptical of the rumors that Mayfield might join the Steelers if the Browns cut him. While he would not outright refute the report, he said they seemed “far-fetched” to him.
“I don’t know if the Baker Mayfield rumors to the Steelers are wrong. But it seems far-fetched,” Rapoport said.
Rapoport went on to list off a variety of reasons that the move wouldn’t make sense for Pittsburgh. He believes that between the players they have and the likelihood that the Steelers draft a quarterback, Mayfield wouldn’t fit into their plans for the coming season.

There’s little doubt that Baker Mayfield will start the 2022 season on another team. The Browns can barely afford to keep Mayfield on their roster now that they have Deshaun Watson.
But the Browns may have made a massive tactical blunder by acquiring Watson before trading Mayfield.
Other NFL teams have already made trades for starting quarterbacks. The Browns missed the chance to get starting-caliber QB compensation. They also gave up all of their leverage after acquiring Watson – their new presumptive starter.
The headline “Baker Mayfield may join the Steelers if he’s cut” might wind up being half right at best. But it would be a shock of all shocks if he isn’t on a roster for one of 31 other teams coming September.
