He had history with Brady, could bring coach
The Las Vegas Raiders are suddenly in the market for both a coach and a general manager, for the third time in three years, after they surprisingly fired Tom Telesco on Thursday.
So, now, the team has to replace both Antonio Pierce and Tom Telesco. the way this happened makes it’s somewhat tricky to try to figure out potential candidates.
The Raiders may try to pair the coach and general manager in package deals, so we may have to look at it this way.
If that’s the case, a possible tandem could be coach Liam Coen and general manager John Spytek of Tampa Bay. This pairing makes sense.
Spytek was in Tampa Bay with Raiders part owner Tom Brady, who will have a major role in these hirings, in Tampa Bay and they were teammates at Michigan in 1999. Plus, Spytek is already familiar with Raiders’ owner Mark Davis.
Spytek could help attract Liam Coen to the Raiders. He fits what they want — a young offensive minded coach. Coen has yet to be among the reported coaches who the Raiders have requested to interview.
They are Detroit offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, Detroit defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, Kansas City defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, Baltimore offensive coordinator Todd Monken (who was in Tampa Bay with Spytek) and former Jets coach Robert Saleh.
Perhaps Johnson or Glenn could come as a package with Lions’ executive Chris Spielman. Spagnuolo could come with Chiefs’ front office man Mike Borgonzi.
If the Raiders are interested in Vikings’ defensive coordinator Brian Flores (as reported), Ryan Grigson of the Vikings could be an option,
Mike Greenberg of Tampa Bay and Thomas Dimitroff and Scott Pioli also have connections to Brady. There are other candidates such as Raiders’ assistant GM Champ Kelly, Louis Riddick, Ian Cunningham, Ed Dodd and Terrance Gray who could get interest.
We’ll see how it plays out, but looking at potential combinations is a good way to start.
