There were plenty of trade rumors surrounding Deebo Samuel heading into the 2022 NFL Draft, but the San Francisco 49ers ultimately decided to keep their star wideout.
On Friday night, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan addressed where things stand with Samuel. Although he admit he was disappointed by Samuel’s trade request, Shanahan understands that it’s a business.
As for the trade offers the 49ers received this week, Shanahan revealed that nothing came “remotely close” to the team’s asking price.
“Nothing was even remotely close to something we thought would be fair to us or fair to the 49ers,” Shanahan said of Samuel, via ESPN’s Nick Wagoner.

So, can the 49ers make things right with Samuel? Shanahan certainly thinks so.
“We have a great relationship with Deebo,” Shanahan told reporters, via ProFootballTalk. “I haven’t seen him a lot since the season ended. I think it’s a little bit easier when you’re dealing with people without screens and phones in front of you and what you guys read, whatever it is. Most of the world’s like that, I know my kids are. But I try not to get too caught up in it. You know somebody, they know you. And when there comes a time when it settles down — hopefully it’ll settle down more after this draft — and things get somewhat easier.”
Samuel is entering the final year of his rookie contract. Whether he gets traded or not, he’ll want a new deal at some point this offseason.
