The first round of the 2022 NFL draft has seen a handful of trades, but one between the New England Patriots and Kansas City Chiefs is stealing the headlines.
Patriots head coach and de facto general manager Bill Belichick loves wheeling and dealing during the draft and tonight was no different. He shipped the team’s No. 21 overall pick and received three picks from the Chiefs.
According to multiple reports, the Patriots received the No. 29 pick, along with the No. 94 and No. 121 picks in this year’s draft. It didn’t take fans long to start reacting.
ESPN’s Patriots reporter Mike Reiss made it clear this trade is no surprise.
“Bill Belichick has made an NFL-high 83 draft-day trades … and here comes another. They have traded with the Chiefs. Chiefs get: 21 Patriots get: 29, 94, 121,” he said.

From an analytics perspective, it seems the Patriots may have received the better end of the bargain.
“Patriots get the best of Chiefs by our AV-based chart. Gained the equivalent of pick No. 63 in surplus value,” analyst Seth Walder said.

At least one fan agrees.
“The Patriots fleeced the Chiefs. In a deep draft like this, trading 94 and 121 to move up 8 spots late in the first round reflects massive overconfidence. New England got 151 cents on the dollar on the Football Perspective Draft Value Chart with this trade,” the fan said.
