There will be no shortage of potential replacements for the fired Antonio Pierce
Now that the Las Vegas Raiders have fired coach Antonio Pierce on Tuesday, let’s look at some potential candidates.
They will be presented in alphabetical order:
Joe Brady:
The Buffalo Bills’ offensive coordinator is on the radar of a few teams. He is 35 and he could appear to the Raiders as a coach who can groom their next quarterback.
Pete Carroll:
The former Seattle Seahawks Super Bowl-winning coach wants back in the NFL after a year off at the age of 73. Raiders’ owner Mark Davis could be interested in Carroll, who would give the AFC West three Super Bowl winning coaches.
Liam Coen:
He’s a hot name and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ offensive coordinator will get a lot of interest. Coen, a Sean McVay protegee, is 39 and has done a great job with Baker Mayfield. That could interest the Raiders who may have to get creative at quarterback this year. He had success with Will Levis at Kentucky and he could potentially reunite with him in las Vegas.
Brian Flores:
The Minnesota Vikings’ defensive coordinator is highly respected. he was with Raiders’ minority owner Tom Brady, who is reportedly expected to be part of the hiring process, in New England
Aaron Glenn:
The Detroit Lions’ defensive coordinator is another top candidate. He has an excellent resume and he should be ready to take over as a head coach.
Patrick Graham:
It wouldn’t be a surprise if Davis gave an interview to the Raiders’ defensive coordinator of the past three seasons.
Brian Griese:
Some teams may be interested in the San Francisco 49ers’ quarterbacks coach, although eh doesn’t a ton of coaching experience as was the case with Pierce.
Jon Gruden:
I know, I know, but he reportedly may be an NFL coaching candidate again and we all know Davis loves him.
Ben Johnson:
The Lions’ offensive coordinator is a major prize. but would he want to go to a team with a murky quarterback situation?
Vance Joseph:
The Broncos’ defensive coordinator has done a great job with that defense and he has head-coaching experience.
Byron Leftwich:
Leftwich would be a major longshot, but he was with Brady in Tampa Bay and could get an interview.
Mike McCarthy:
He is expected to be out of his contract with the Dallas Cowboys and could be interested in the Raiders.
Josh McCown:
He’s only been a coach for two years, but he has gotten head-coaching interest before. His work with Sam Darnold, who could be a free-agent option in two months, could appeal to the Raiders. He also knows J.J. McCarthy, who could be a trade option, well
Jesse Minter:
The Raiders had interest in Jim Harbaugh before, maybe they will want his defensive coordinator and weaken a division opponent in the process.
Todd Monken:
The Ravens’ offensive coordinator has done a great job and he’d likely be interested in reuniting with Brock Bowers, who he coached at Georgia.
Kellen Moore:
The Philadelphia Eagles’ offensive coordinator is another hot young offensive mind.
Matt Nagy:
The Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator has head-coaching experience and could get another chance.
Kevin O’Connell:
Other teams reportedly could try to trade for the Vikings’ head coach, but it seems unlikely.
Wes Phillips:
The Vikings’ offensive coordinator could be appealing for the same reasons as McCown.
Greg Roman:
The Chargers’ offensive coordinator could be interesting option.
Robert Salah:
Saleh, fired during the season as the New York Jets coach, is highly respected and eh would be an upgrade from Pierce.
Deion Sanders:
As crazy as it sounds, he may be linked to the Silver and Black in an attempt to try to pair him with his son, Shedeur Sanders.
David Shaw:
The former Stanford has been connected to the Raiders before and he is getting some interest in this cycle.
Bobby Slowik:
The Houston Texans offensive coordinator is another young hot name.
Arthur Smith:
He did a good job as the Pittsburgh Steelers’ offensive coordinator this season and he has head-coaching experience.
Mike Tomlin:
If the Steelers flame out in the playoffs this weekend, some teams could try to trade for him. Why not the Raiders?
Mike Vrabel:
Many think he can be the favorite because of ties to Brady. But he is interviewing in New England this week and they have already satisfied the Rooney Rule. He could be off the market soon.
