Even though the Las Vegas Raiders did not have the ultimate team success they were looking for last season, the team still had plenty of positives to speak on. One of those was an addition they made last offseason in wide receiver Jakobi Meyers.
Meyers paired with Davante Adams to form one of the best receiver duos in the NFL. In his first year with the Raiders, and despite inconsistent quarterback play, Meyers finished the year with 71 catches for 807 yards and eight touchdowns while also adding a pair of rushing touchdowns.
Meyers’ former team, the New England Patriots, certainly could have used his services last season, and even owner Robert Kraft admitted he made a mistake. On a recent episode of The Shop, Davante Adams was discussing how much he learned from Meyers last season, and Kraft admitted that the Patriots shouldn’t have let Meyers go via Justin Churchill of A to Z Sports:
“That’s never the mentality that anyone should have, let alone me,” Davante Adams said of learning the game and being done learning. “I’m learning something new, and the thing is, you can learn in so many ways, like I learned from new guys. I learned so many things from Jakobi [Meyers] this year that I didn’t know before. He was basically the best-kept secret in the league for me.”
“We shouldn’t have let him go,” New England Patriots owner Robert Craft replied on The Shop.
“I was going to get to that, but I didn’t want to say it. I appreciate you, though,” Adams said with a laugh.
The Patriots chose to add Juju Smith-Schuster in place of Meyers, but that move did not pan out the way New England had hoped. Meanwhile, the Raiders reaped the benefits of adding Meyers next to Adams, and under new coaching and a new system, they have the opportunity to go to another level next season.
Kraft recognizing just how good and important Meyers was to the Patriots and admitting a mistake takes a lot of guts, as many in his position don’t like to admit when they’re wrong. But what’s done is done, and the Raiders look to be on a positive swing while the Patriots are in the midst of a complete rebuild.
Puka Nacua calls Raiders’ Jakobi Meyers most underrated receiver in NFL
Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Puka Nacua had arguably the greatest rookie season for a receiver in NFL history. He is quickly being recognized as one of the top players in his position, but in his eyes, the Raiders’ Jakobi Meyers doesn’t get enough credit.
Nacua recently appeared on Maxx Crosby’s podcast, The Rush, and when asked who is the most underrated receiver in the league, Nacua brought up Meyers and how much he loves watching his tape. Crosby quickly agreed, noting just how good Meyers is in all facets of the game.
