The lasting image of the Las Vegas Raiders’ loss to the Detroit Lions on Monday Night Football was that of star wide receiver Davante Adams slamming his helmet down in frustration late in the game. Adams finished with just one catch on seven targets for 11 yards in the Raiders’ 26-14 loss.
But the night could have been much bigger for Adams, who had got open on two separate occasions for what likely would have been touchdowns of 98 and 60 yards, but quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo was unable to put the ball where it needed to be.
Of course, after the game, Adams was asked how he was feeling, but the Raiders star refused to delve into it deeply, saying he simply didn’t have the words to describe them and didn’t want to say something that would be blown up via Bridget Condon of NFL Network:
“Honestly I don’t know what to say at this moment. I truly don’t. I wish I had the words to say something that’s not gonna get blown up in the media and taken out of context. So I truly just don’t know.”
Adams would ultimately say he is frustrated, to no one’s surprise. But the frustration stems not from his lack of production on the night but the struggles of the Raiders’ offense and their inability to figure it out:
“Frustration, but that kinda goes without saying […] It’s not hard to maintain the confidence in our offense it’s just hard to curb your frustration when you can’t put it together when you know you should.”
The Raiders once again failed to score 20 points, a mark that the offense still has yet to meet nearly midway through the season, and totaled a season-low 157 yards. This despite the defense forcing three turnovers from the Lions, including an interception return for a touchdown from Marcus Peters.
Adams has just 14 receptions for 142 yards over the last four weeks combined, during which the Raiders have scored 56 points total. He has been open about his frustrations stemming from the fact that the offense has been abysmal, and he feels he can be a difference-maker in those issues.
Knowing that the world was anxious to see what he had to say, Adams played it smart in not commenting too much on the situation. Rumors about him wanting out of Las Vegas are sure to come regardless, but he is committed to the Raiders and does not want to cause any distractions to his team.
