Assistant replaces Luke Getsy as play caller
As expected, the Las Vegas Raiders have settled on a new offensive coordinator and play caller for the rest of the 2024 season
The team announced Tuesday afternoon is promoting Scott Turner from pass game coordinator to the interim offensive coordinator. This was the expected move since Raiders’ head coach Antonio Pierce fired offensive coordinator Luke Getsy on Sunday night after a loss at the Cincinnati Bengals, their fifth straight defeat. The team also fired offensive line coach James Cregg and quarterbacks coach Rich Scangarello along with Getsy,
Joe Philbin was named the interim offensive coordinator to replace Cregg. Philbin has been on Pierce’s staff as a senior offensive assistant. Philbin has been an offensive line coach at the college level and with the Green Bay Packers, Indianapolis Colts and Dallas Cowboys, last in 2022.
No interim quarterback coach has been named. The current staff could handle that duty perhaps.
Turner, who was the Washington Commanders’ offensive coordinator from 2020-22, was hired by former Las Vegas coach Josh McDaniels as the pass-game coordinator in 2023 and was retained by Pierce after he hired Getsy this offseason. Turner, 42, has 12 years of NFL coaching experience and has coached the Carolina Panthers, Minnesota Vikings and Cleveland Browns.
Turner is the son of Norv Turner, who was the Raiders’ head coach in 2004-05. Norv Turner is joining the Raiders to help on offense for the rest of the season as a senior advisor. He is 72 and last coached in Carolina in 2019. Turner joins Marvin Lewis, Tom Coughlin and Philbin former NFL head coaches as part of Pierce’s staff. Coughlin is not on the day-to-day staff.
Scott Turner will begin his play-calling duties November 17 at the Miami Dolphins when the 2-7 Raiders return from their bye.
This is the second straight season the Raiders changed offensive coordinators during the season. In 2023, quarterbacks coach Bo Hardagree replaced offensive coordinator Mick Lombardi who was fired with head coach Josh McDaniels in Week 9.
