New practice squad member has key connection to Raiders
The Las Vegas Raiders signed running back Isaiah Spiller to their practice squad this week.
Let’s take a closer look at Spiller:
Size:
6-1, 215 pounds.
How’s this for odd?
2022 4th round
Pick 120, Carolina LB Brandon Smith
Pick 121, New England CB Jack Jones
Pick 122, #Raiders RB Zamir White
Pick 123, Chargers RB Isaiah Spiller.
Jones is now Raiders starter. White is on IR and Smith and Spiller are on Las Vegas practice squad.— Bill Williamson (@BWilliamsonNFL) December 18, 2024
NFL experience:
Spiller was drafted in the fourth round of the 2022 draft by the Los Angeles Chargers and general manager Tom Telesco. He, of course, is now the Raiders’ general manager and he signed Spiller this week. Spiller didn’t do much in two NFL seasons. He played in six games as a rookie and nine in 2023.He has 55 carries for 137 yards in his carrier. The new Chargers’ regime released Spiller in August. He was signed to the practice squad, but was released shortly later. He’s been on the street for most of the season.
College:
Spiller played at Texas A&M from 2019-21.
How he will fit in with Raiders:
Spiller is just 23 so his career is salvageable. Unless there is an injury on the 53-man roster or unless is lights out in practice in the final couple of weeks, Spiller’s time in Las Vegas the rest of this season will be about impressing the staff enough to sign a future contract in January to participate in the offseason and training camp in 2025.
