After initially agreeing to return to Dallas for the 2022 season, Cowboys star defensive end Randy Gregory flipped his commitment and signed a new deal with the Denver Broncos.
While there was originally little information as to why Gregory changed his mind, some new reports have shed some light on that aspect of the deal.
The veteran defensive end reportedly objected to a specific clause on his contract that would give the Cowboys the right to void or withhold money if he’s fined by NFL. This clause is standard language on every Dallas contract (with the exception of Dak Prescott).
“Sources say language that Randy Gregory objected to is standard language in every Cowboys player contract w/ one exception _ Dak Prescott. Clause gives club the right to void or withhold money if player is fined by NFL. Sources stress it has never invoked the clause,” Cowboys insider David Moore reports.
The Cowboys were reportedly open to “massaging the language” and working out a new deal, per NFL Network insider Jane Slater.
And it was my understanding they were open to massaging the language and working it out 🤷🏼♀️ https://t.co/tRMAZF2Ffr

The NFL world took to Twitter to react to this news.
“There’s a lot that happened. And its really puzzling how it all ended up. Very odd,” one fan wrote.
“This is getting strange, and starting to feel like Randy was looking for a reason to back out,” another added.
Like I was saying…. Did Stephen present this late in the game? Maybe, and that isnt cool if done on purpose, but Gregory didn’t need to leave the negotiation over it either. https://t.co/8uV5E8GYMU
