Loyola Chicago returns to the NCAA tournament to face Ohio State on Friday afternoon. Their most popular supporter, Sister Jean Dolores-Schmidt, will again cheer them on in person.
The team’s chaplain will sit courtside as the No. 10 Ramblers face the No. 7 Buckeyes at Pittsburgh. In a Zoom conference Wednesday, via Nick Schultz of On3Sports, Sister Jean told reporters she’s yet to scout the opposition. However, the 102-year-old nun knows that the schools’ men’s volleyball programs are familiar with one another as Midwest Intercollegiate Volleyball Association competitors.
“I know the Buckeyes only from [men’s] volleyball because they play our volleyball team and they’re always tough against our volleyball team,” Sister Jean said. “So, that always translates in my head that buddies tell buddies stuff. They just might want to be out to get us.”
Sister Jean thinks Ohio State may have extra motivation vs Loyola Chicago:

The Ramblers have made their last two tournament appearances count. In 2018, their first March Madness bid since 1985, they shocked the world — and elevated Sister Jean to household fame — by making the Final Four as a No. 11 seed.
Last year, they advanced to the Sweet 16 after upsetting the top-seeded Illinois.
Sister Jean believes those runs put a target on the school’s back.
“In fact, lots of people are always out to get us,” she added. “I think it’s because we were the Cinderella that time. And it’s not a bad thing. They just want to win. Everybody wants to win. But for the basketball team, I know they did well. I know Ohio State did well. They’re in a higher conference than we are.”
She added that she’s saving her full assessment of Ohio State for Loyola Chicago’s pre-game prayer.
“I have to do a little more scouting. I’ve done some, but I have to do a little more, and then I’ll tell them who to look out for as far as I can tell.”
