Let’s look at some key aspects of this news and what it can mean:
It makes sense:
That’s a fascinating development, but not surprising. It’s been said that Brady’s presence is helped the Raiders attract a stronger pool of coaching candidates, including top prize, Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson. But the front office has a different dynamic. The front-office community is small and tight one. The members know how things can get thrown off track easily if there is a lot of involvement from ownership. The candidates just saw Tom Telesco got pushed put because of Brady’s involvement and the candidates are watching closely. If a GM job comes with less power than usual because of the involvement of a higher future in the franchise’s hierarchy, some candidates may not be interested.
Communication is key:
Candidates who may not be comfortable with the situation simply need to ask Brady what exactly his involvement be before they decide they don’t want to move forward with an interview.
Exact chain of command needs to play out:
I don’t think anyone really knows what the coach-GM chain of power will look like. I think it depends on who the team ends up hiring as coach, so I think everyone’s exact involvement on the day-to-day football operations is still to be determined.
Does Brady have time and is he ready?
If Brady really plans to be the de facto GM and be the main decisions maker on everything, that create more questions? Will Brady really want to invest the time that it takes to do that? Will he keep his FOX broadcasting job? Will he be any good in that role?
Conclusion:
There is a lot to shake out, but it will be interesting to see what the exact role of the new general manager will have and how it relates to Brady’s role moving forward.
